Pig in Pöllau

The Wd8 pig made by Belinda Ziegler is one of the highlights in the exhibition 'Mensch ist Mensch' in Schloss Pöllau in the austrian town Pöllau near Hartberg. The pig is presented inside a real old kitchen surrounding inside the exhibition. The exhibition shows works of 25 different artists, all to the theme 'Mensch ist Mensch'.

A special feature of the exhibition is the possibility to take part in a workshop by the exhibiting artists. Each of the participating artists in the exhibition offers a course in summer as part of the 'styrian summer_art' festival.

International Women's Day

After the big success of the International Women's Day event organized in Markt Hartmannsdorf in 2006, there will be an event again this year, in 2009. The International Women's Day event includes films, a discussion about gender, a dance performance, a singing performance, lots of homemade food and cakes, a clothes exchange corner and a workshop to create an original tetrapak wallet.

To make it possible for all women to come, there will be child care and men are welcome too.

The event starts at 12:00h and will last till about 18:00h. Free entrance.

Wd8 Grapes

October is the month to pick the grapes. It takes all summer for the grapes to grow and then in October all of a sudden there are so many. This year we decided that we will try to make juice from them. The Wd8 team spent and afternoon picking and cleaning the grapes. One of the neighbours then made a little workshop and showed how to turn the grapes into bottles of juice.

Once Upon A Time... in einem Dorf

On Saturday evening August 16, 2008 the film 'Once Upon A Time... in einem Dorf' by Eva Ursprung was presented in Wd8. The film shows the daily life in Walkersdorf mixed with the visits of international artists in the small village. The film was presented inside one of the rooms of the old Wd8-farm. After the film presentation we continued the evening outside behind the Wd8-farm watching the beautiful partial lunar eclipse.

Photos from the workshop on July 6, 2008 in Wd8, as part of the symposium 'mother:earth', are online at the Styrian Summer Art photo archive. During this beautiful Sunday morning women from different arabic and european countries visited Wd8. Together we made a relief from clay, guided by artist Belinda Ziegler. The symposium 'mother:earth' took place in Pöllau bei Hartberg as part of the Styrian Summer Art festival in July 2008.

Kleine Zeitung created a very nice article today about Wd8 and the Regionale08. The photo with the article shows the bus stop sign of the Regionale08 shuttle bus in front of the future Wd8 metro station. At the moment the Wd8 metro station is only a dot on a virtual map. But since last Friday the bus station 'Wd8 Walkersdorf' really exists! It is one of the bus stops where the Regionale08 shuttle bus stops. It is listed in the timetable on the bus stop sign, that was especially made for the Regionale.

Besides a metro station, Wd8 now also has its own television station :-)

Bellydance in the Cowbarn

Austrian artist Heidi Zenz has made a beautiful belly dance performance at Wd8. After painting a secret oriental door on the outside wall of the barn, she then danced through this painted door of the sultan into the former cow barn, the same cow barn where the famous Wd8 pig was made. A video of the dance performance will be shown in Pavelhaus during the Regionale08 in Summer 2008.

Walkersdorf - Shanghai - Metro

Already since two years Wd8 is planning to transform the former wine cellar of the old farm into a metro station. In Shanghai they do not just plan such things, they also realize them. Here is a photo of the Jing'an Temple that has been transformed into an entrance to the Shanghai Metro.

Walkersdorf - Shanghai

Today at 14:20 the Wd8-Team will enter the new Wd8 metro network and travel to Shanghai, the current center of the world. During the next two weeks the Wd8-Team will be exploring the young, extremely fast expanding metro network in this Chinese metropole. The first line of this metro network opened in 1995. By now the metro network has a total length of more than 225km, with 8 different metro lines and 161 metro stations! We will use our time to travel around the town on the different lines, with different trains, visiting the stations, collecting impressions, ideas, structures, sounds and images. During the following two months, these impressions will merge into sketches for the future metro network that will connect Walkersdorf directly with its neighbouring European capitals Ljubljana, Budapest, Zagreb and Vienna. And of course there will be a direct line from Walkersdorf to Graz-Ikea. The photo shows the entrance in the former Wd8 wine cellar to this future metro network.

As a preparation for our visit to Shanghai, I found this guide on the official website of the Shanghai Metro that explains step by step how to use the metro network. The first water

This is the first water in the new Wd8 pond. After the first Wd8 pond started to lose its water in autumn last year, I decided to fix it. But before removing all the water from the pond to fix it, I wanted to move as much as possible of the life in the old pond into a new pond. So during the last weeks a new pond has emerged. It has turned into an interesting creation that is not going so deep into the earth but is going up since I created some sort of hill for it. This photo shows the first bucket of water that was emptied into the new pond. Now we are waiting for the rain to fill it up. And then I must try to catch the frog that is still hiding in the last bit of water in the old pond and try to move it into the new pond...

Wd8 Security

Yesterday the surveillance camera was installed at the Cabinet in Ljubljana. The Cabinet is a small gallery hidden in the courtyard behind the well-known Škuc gallery. The Cabinet is an initiative from the Domestic Research Society. During a visit of members from this unusual society to Wd8, they were so impressed by the surveillance cameras that are protecting the pigsty, that they wanted one to secure the Cabinet. Of course this camera had to be installed in a special way, with special guests, special cakes and a simple screwdriver. The photos below give an impression of the event. A more detailed documentation was made by two video-artists. Hopefully those videos will be ready edited and online soon. In any case, the cabinet is now officially secured by Wd8.


Two special cakes for the event were made by Martina and carefully transported from Walkersdorf to Ljubljana.

Among the guests were Tjaša and Gaja, alias Rot Pulojva, famous from their movie 'Shadow on the Wall' (Senza na Zidu), that was recorded for a big part at Wd8 in spring 2007.

The party was a little bit like a birthday party ;-)

The setup for the installation: cym is installing the camera with a screwdriver, Jani is holding the old chair, preventing cym from falling down, Damijan is filming the event from the right angle, Rene is filming the happening from the left angle, Alenka is taking this photo and one of the guests is closely observing the event.

And the next artists to enjoy the cakes: Borut Savski and Stefan Doepner are playing a concert in Škuc just after the install party.

VeranstaltungsZentrum Ottendorf

The new event hall in Ottendorf an der Rittschein (the municipality to which Walkersdorf belongs) was opened today. The event hall, das VeranstaltungsZentrum Ottendorf, is a huge space, completely new, that can be used for sport events as well as concerts and anything else that requires a big hall. It offers space to more than 500 people. It was built within 7 months, so quick, I didn't even notice that they were building something there.

Today was the opening, a big event with very good food. That is to say, the food looked very good and I was very hungry... but the good food was only for the local politicians and other important people. For all other guests at the party there were two types of saugages to choose from, with mustard and ketchup, typical Austrian...

Anyway, it is a very nice hall and something quite unique for such a small town. Maybe some day also Wd8 will organize a big event at this place.

The Kabinet

Hidden behind the well-known gallery ŠKUC in the old town in the center of Ljubljana is a little courtyard that shows remarkable similarities with the Wd8 courtyard. The old house inside this courtyard has been empty for years, but since a few years it houses 'the Kabinet', a movable gallery built out of symmetric cubes. 'The Kabinet' is a project by the 'Društvo za domače raziskave', the 'Society for Domestic Research'.

On April 17, 2008 the Kabinet will be connected to Wd8 via installing one of the surveillance cameras from the pigsty at the entrance of the Kabinet. The installation party is planned for Thursday, April 17, 2008 in the afternoon, from 15:00h to 18:00h.

The camera will be installed in front of the well-hidden door of the Kabinet.

The courtyard features a lot of interesting similarities to the Wd8 building...

However from the Kabinet courtyard you can see the tower from Ljubljana castle. Something that Wd8 cannot offer. But from the Wd8 courtyard you can almost see the Riegersburg.

Here are two more things that the Wd8 courtyard doesn't have (yet): A print of the hands of famous Slovenian artist Nani Poljanec and a walnut tree.

The Kabinet is located in the courtyard behind ŠKUC. This is the view from the Kabinet to the backdoor of ŠKUC gallery. The Kabinet is a project of the Domestic Research Society.

Wd8 - Center of the World

On Wednesday, March 26, 2008 we had the first session to create tv transmitters for the next installation at Wd8. We had a meeting in a small kitchen somewhere in Šiška, Ljubljana with a simple map and a lot of small pieces to solder together. The map that we used for soldering the transmitters can be found here.

	These are all the parts you need to create 5 transmitters. Really! The total costs for these parts was just 14 euro!!
	And of course you need some cables and solder. And also the plates to fix them on. And glue, very important! The paper below the cables shows the schematic with detailed manual to build.
	Here we are, concentrated while soldering the parts together. It took us just one hour to create 3 transmitters.
	This is the finished transmitter. We connected it just like it is here on the photo and it really works! We were receiving the distorted signal sent from the computer on the old analog television. So much fun!

Wd8 and Art Center Slovenia

From October 2003 until September 2005 Oskar and I were regular guests at the Art Center in Prekmurje, Slovenia. Art Center Sredisce, located in a rural area directly on the border of Slovenia and Hungary, has been an important inspiration for the Wd8 initiative.

In May 2005, 3 years old Oskar created a sculpture of a house with long metal sticks that he had found at Art Center. Now, in March 2008, almost 3 years later, he found some metal sticks at Wd8 and immediately used them to create a sculpture. This time he created a huge text, for visitors from above, to view from the sky.

Pig in the Pigsty

The pig has moved back into the pigsty. After its trip to Graz in November 2007 it stayed indoors with us during winter. But today we moved it back outside into the pigsty. It wasn't happy at first to move back out, but once it was inside the pigsty again it smiled at us just like before.

The surveillance camera, that is still working, already since September last year, was closely observing the event.

Crash Keyboard Poetry Workshop

Today it was the Crash Keyboard Poetry Workshop at the Rdeče Zore Festival in Ljubljana. There was a pile of old keyboards and a lot of screwdrivers waiting for us in the Info Shop above Menza at Metelkova. After an interesting presentation from R.G. Gözüm about e-waste we started taking the keyboards apart. We were supposed to create statements using the old keys from the keyboards, but I didn't get much further than putting the letters 'WD8' together. Here they are on a keyboard with a Turkish keyboard layout.

Rdeče Zore

The Wd8 Team is in Ljubljana these days, hanging out at the Rdeče Zore festival. Today we joined the car-repair workshop in Menza. It was very nice, but only in Slovene, so after about 1,5 hours we left the workshop and walked into town. We ended up in Kiberpipa playing with the ancient computers in the small computer museum that they have set up in a corner. Among the computers in their collection are several that I remember, that I have used myself many years ago. One of the computers that is exhibited there, is an Amstrad Schneider, very similar to the one on which I had my first experiences with programming. Here is a photo of the screen of the fully functional machine, showing the date 1985. Spring

Today was the first day that we were eating outside on the terrace. After the really warm February, today again was a beautiful spring day. For tomorrow snow is expected and winter will be here... But winter or spring, the beginning of March will be the start of the regular news updates again. We have been working very hard all winter and a lot of new projects are planned for 2008. The first Wd8 publication is here! A book with 88 pages in full colour. The book documents the project 'Connected:07' and in addition navigates the theme of real/virtual in the pigsty.
